Summary on Grant Application Form
Preliminary experiments on small area cells incorporating thick film Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95 supported electrolytes have already demonstrated that satisfactory current densities (100 mA/cm2) can be achieved at 500oC with acceptable over potentials. It should be emphasised that no attempt has been made so far to optimise the microstructure and interfacial properties of these small cells and so there is scope for improving the relevant performance. The initial phase of the work will involve two activities; construction of equipment to accommodate 5x5cm single cells and small stacks, and optimisation of small (1cm2) single cells. The final phase will be concerned with evaluation of the 5x5cm units.
