Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will firstly establish the compositional and processing factors that limit easy glass formation in Mg based alloys containing transition metals and rare earths as glass-formers. This will involve determining critical thicknesses for glass formation by wedge chill casting and characterisation of the glasses so formed and competing crystalline phases by DSC, XRD, optical metallography and in some cases TEM, using chill cast or melt spun material as appropriate. Results will be compared with glass formation theory so as to develop an indicative model for this class of systems. Responses to heat treatment and hot deformation will be determined so as to identify conditions significantly improving or degrading properties. The effect of alloy composition and material condition or dissolution rate in a saline environment and wear rate in a pin-and-disc test will also be determined for promising systems with a view to possible applications, for example, as light alloy machine parts.
