Summary on Grant Application Form
Lysotropic liquid crystalline phases are characterised by a unique nanoscale architecture which involves spatially periodic hydrophobic and hydrophilic aqueous regions. This architecture affords an unusual environment in which to carry out the hydrolysis and condensation of reactive precursors to oxide ceramics. Two types of systems will be investigated. (1) Ternary mixtures (amphiphile + water + precursor): the nanoscale architecture of these systems as a function of composition will be investigated and related to the morphology, size and size distribution of the resulting oxide ceramics. (2) Binary mixtures (polymerisable amphiphile + water): A range of nanoscale architectures will be locked in by in situ polymerisation of the amphiphiles. The reactive oxide precursors will be infiltrated into these structures to form oxide ceramics.
