The research outlined in this proposal aims to examine the mechanisms of corrosion pitting in a number of resistant alloys by elucidating the steps involved in the three stages of the process: nucleation, metastable propogation and the transition to stability. The work will involve quantative measurement of the microscopic current transients, of the order of picoamperes and less, which nucleate pits: their form, frequency of occurrence and size distribution as a function of environmental and metallurgical variables. The features which enable metastable pit growth to ensue from these will be investigated, as well as the transition to stable pit growth. The research will aim to improve test methods, to make these more reliable and to devise some simple methods of surface treatment aimed at minimising pitting corrosion in high performance alloys.
