To determine the local electron temperature Te, we plan to measure the FIR intensity E from a small area by using a diaphragm. To reduce the reflection from the back surface, we shall place it on top of a GaAs substrate doped with shallow donors which strongly absorb FIR at these frequencies. We also plan to examine the use of amorphous carbon plastic absorbers for the same purpose. The efficiency of this reduction will be checked by measuring the FIR intensity from regions outside the 2DEG. We then plan to measure the temperatures of the hotspots near the contacts and also the temepratures in the centre of the 2DEG to check if the electronic thermal conductivity Kxx=O as expected in the Quantum Hall regime and to observe the expected increase in Te when I>Ic. Phonon emission from edge states is less strongly inhibited by momentum conservation than from bulk states so the electron temperature should fall as the edges are approached and we shall look for evidence of this effect.
