This proposal considers a new approach to asymmetric catalysis. Substrate molecules will undergo asymmetric reactions when temporarily attached to a homochiral catalytic auxiliary. The auxiliaries will be in equilibrium with the substrate and product, but only used in catalytic amounts. Several related ideas are explored within the proposal.Firstly, the use of an auxiliary which activates the substrate to reaction is considered. This approach is applied to the asymmetric alkylation of amino ester derivatives.Secondly, reagent activation by a catalytic auxiliary is considered for asymmetric epoxidation with novel oxaziridinium reagents.A further category considered is one wherein the reaction is considered for asymmetric epoxidation with novel oxaziridinium reagents.Additionally, the use of homochiral catalytic tethers for intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions is outlined.This proposal considers a wide range of reactions which may be performed asymmetrically, using a novel concept in asymmetric synthesis.
