Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research programme is to search for magneto-optical materials which have low optical absorption, exhibit low medium noise and show a large magneto-optic effect, preferably at short wavelengths. Promising candidates for such materials are Co-Ti doped barium hexa- ferrites, Bi-substituted amorphous zinc and cobalt ferrites. Thin films of these materials will be prepared principally by LAD and if necessary by DC or RF sputtering. These films will then be characterised structurally, magnetically, optically and magneto-optically using VSM, SEM, EDA, TEM, LXRD, HXRD, Ellipsometry, Kerr and Faraday Polarimetry and Photometry. This characterisation will be followed by an analysis which will involve both fundamental solid state theory and practical design of quadrilayer structures for enhanced magneto-optic recording.
