Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim is to develop a new class of complex fluids which have the propensity to respond to optical and chemical (pH) stimuli. Monomers which have both amino- and imino-groups incorporated into a conjugated aromatic framework which can also be photo-active will be designed and synthesised. Their self-assembly will then be characterised using mainly spectroscopic methods. The next stage will focus on characterisation of the phase behaviour and study of the properties of the complex fluids formed by these aggregates. The tunability of this phase behaviour by variation of pH will then be investigated. Finally, the optical command response of the complex fluids based on photochemically reactive monomers will be established.
