Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research brings together the joint expertise of the applicants in a collaborative programme designed to explore the use of new organolanthanide alkyls and hydrides for the generation of living catalytic systems for acrylate and related polymerisations, ring-opening lactone polymerisations and block copolymerisations. The organolanthanide alkyls and hydrides will be based on sterically demanding aryloxide, alkoxide and amide spectatoral ligands in order to generate soluble, well-defined monomeric and dimeric initiators for such polymerisations. The use of binaphthol and related ligands will also be investigated for the synthesis of chiral organolanthanide species capable of acting as initiators for stereospecific polymerisations. Model systems for these studies based specifically on diamagnetic M(III) hydrides and alkyls of Sc, Y, La and Lu will also be developed for elucidation of the mechanism of such polymerisations by NMR.
