Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim will be to synthesise novel materials containing units of small band gap metal chalcogenides regularly distributed in an insulating framework. The major initial effort will be directed at preparing sodalite materials of the type M8[TO2]12X2 where M=divalent cation eg Zn,Cd,Pb; X=S,Se,Te and T=framework building elements such as AI,Ga,Si/Be. Systems with different framework geometries, eg cancrinites and scapolites will also be investigated. These compounds can be considered to be expanded semiconductors of a perfectly regular geometry. As such these semiconducting superlattices have potential applications in for example optical transistors, photodetectors and lasers. Therefore the optical properties of the product of the synthesis programme will be characterised eg absorption, photoluminescence and relaxation dynamics in collaboration with Dr R Harley of the Physics department.
