Summary on Grant Application Form
The intermetallic compound Nb3A1 has considerable potential for superconducting and high temperature structural applications. It is proposed that a study be performed of its plastic deformation characteristics to enable the fabrication and use of alloys based on this compound. This work will involve the use of Transmission Electron Microscopy to obtain detailed analyses of pre- and post- deformation microstructures. Initially, the deformation of stoichiometric Nb3A1 at elevated temperatures will be investigated. The remainder of the programme will consider the effects of: deviations from stoichiometry, ternary alloying additions and rapid solidification from the melt. These observations will be correlated with measurements of appropriate mechanical properties.
