Summary on Grant Application Form
We will utilise the spin-probe and spin-label techniques to investigate the dynamics and structure in a variety of multiphase and multi-component polymer systems: Blends of miscible and immiscible polymers: In the latter we are particularly interested in the interphase where the sensitivity of the nitroxide label to the mobility of its environment can be exploited. In miscible systems we shall be seeking information on microheterogeneity. Side chain liquid crystal polymers: The microscopic structure and molecular dynamics in the mesophase will be investigated by analysing ESR spectra of systems carrying a nitroxide label on the mesogenic group. The molecular behaviour will be related to the ultrastructure and macroscopic properties. Plasticised and antiplasticised polymers: In the former, the spin-probe method will be used to elucidate the mechanism of ion migration in a new class of polymer electrolytes based on PMMA plasticised with propylene carbonate. In the latter, both label and probe techniques will be employed, the aim being to clarify the molecular processes that contribute to the phenomenon of antiplasticisation.
