State variable methods will be used to model the evolution of microstructure and flow stress during hot working. A mathematical description of lattice deformation, recovery and recrystallisation is sought in terms of physically measurable quantities (in particular, dislocation structure). This formulation will be used (a) to relate flow stress to structure for a given strain, strain-rate and temperature history (as in a rolling pass); (b) to describe microstructural changes by static recovery and recrystallisation (as during interpas periods) and thus the material state prior to the next rolling pass. The long-term aim is to minimise the empiricism of present methods, and to improve prediction of microstructure and properties in multi-pass rolling operations. A parallel experimental programme has been proposed by the Dept of Engineering Materials, University of Sheffield. Validation of the models would be made by close collaboration between the two groups.
