Summary on Grant Application Form
Bowl-shaped liquid crystals will be produced by three routes: (a) the synthesis of tripodal tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)-borates and -alkalines [HE(3-RC3H2N2)3]z, L#, (E=B, z = -1; E = R'C, Z = O; R = CnH2n-1; R' = H, Me or Ph) and their metal complexes [ML#XYZ], where M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn, Mo etc); (b) the formation of partially encapsulating hexadentate N=based ligands derived from substituted salicylaldehydes and pyridine-2-aldehydes with tris(2-aminothylamine)amine (tren), and derived by condensation of bidentate oxime ligands with BF3, and generation of metal complexes (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu etc); and (c) the synthesis of facial tris-substituted octahedral metal complexes based on metal carbonyls, isocyanides and organometallic species (M = Fe, Co, Rh, Cr, Mo, W, Mn, etc). Potential mesophases in a compound will be detected by hot stage polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the microscopic nature of the mesophases will be investigated by hot stage x-ray diffraction, if necessary supplementing this by infrared dichroism to determine the orientation of molecules in aligned mesophases.
