The research is aimed at small size, high capacity hard-disk computer memories. The application is towards lap-top type personal computers. High areal information packing densities on hard disks require (a) high track density and (b) high longitudinal short wavelength recording - both at low cost. Ultra-high packing density is possible with perpendicular recording as long as the recording head can fly very low or be in continuous contact with the disk. To achieve high track density, very narrow track heads must be investigated (~ 1um track width). For such low track width signals will be very small so the Giant Magnetoresistance effect will be utilised for the first time in this application. To increase data rate, multitrack GMR heads will be investigated - also for the first time. For very short wavelengths a new magnetic media coating will be explored having very high perpendicular anisotropy on a platinum underlayer and a very low coercivity sub-layer. Sandwich-type storage layers will be considered for lower noise but with optimum exchange coupling.
