Summary on Grant Application Form
Computer software will be further developed for analysing a range of physical processes where grain-boundary diffusion mechanisms dominate the material response. The numerical procedures will allow for the operation of an interface reaction at the grain boundaries and be able to model the development of microstructure from any initial prescribed two dimensional distribution of grains, voids and microcracks, as the body creeps under load. The software will be used to model: the evolution of damage in creeping bodies, paying particular attention to localisation events; creep crack growth, including an evaluation of the interaction of a growing crack with voids and microcracks growing in its path; and superplastic deformation. The procedures will be extended to three dimensional grain structures and used to evaluate the effect of three dimensional constraint on void growth.
