Summary on Grant Application Form
The RNLI requires information concerning the life of FRP materials in marine service. Some published data is available for degradation of skin materials due to water, ultra violet light and cyclic loading of (single skin) laminates. The particular concern to be addressed in this project is the long term behaviour under cyclic loading of complete FRP sandwich materials. This will be achieved in a three-fold manner. Firstly, a series of experiments will be conducted on a variety of sandwich under varying conditions. Secondly, the data generated in these tests will be used to understand and explain the mechanisms causing fatigue damage. Thirdly, a technique for the prediction of fatigue life of sandwich panels will be evolved. The strategic objectives of the work, therefore, are to aid designers of high performance boats made from FRP sandwich in assessing life performance of their structures and operators of such craft in evolving a maintenance and repair schedule from a fatigue viewpoint.
