Summary on Grant Application Form
A technique will be developed, based on laser flash photolysis/Laser Induced Flourescence, to measure product channel efficiencies in reactions of importance in combustion. LIF of OH and the photon induced LIF of H and O will be employed. The technique relies on correlating the signals from the transient species, using reactions with well defined product efficiencies which link the species (eg OH + H2 --> H + H2O). The reactions 1CH2 + H2O, O2, C2H2 and 3CH2 + O2 and C2H2 + OH and O will be studied. They have been chosen because of their significance in combustion and their fundamental interest. Computer modelling of the reactions will also be performed, using a master equation to study pressure dependencies. The analysis will be based, at least in part, on ab initio surfaces to provide molecular parameters for transition states and intermediates. The use of a recently developed technique to model multiwell reactions is also planned.
