Summary on Grant Application Form
Microstructural studies will be carried out or a range of composites based upon metallic (MMC) and ceramic (CMC) systems with particular reference to their interface and surface characteristics. The data will be correlated with fundamental mechanisms concerning their preparation and behaviour. The materials include fibre-reinforced MMC manufactured by liquid metal infiltration, particulate-reinforced MMC produced by stir casting, and fibre-reinforced CMC made by hot pressing or by sol-gel infiltration. Processing parameters to be investigated include matrix chemistry, temperature and pressure, reinforcement integrity and volume fraction, fibre/matrix interface reaction, and internal stress. Property measurement includes composite strength, modulus and fracture toughness, and long-term assessment involves corrosion, wear behaviour and degradation caused by conjoint action.
