Silicides of the transition metals occupy an intermediate position in properties between ceramic and metallic materials. They have many of the characteristics of intermetallic compounds such as low-temperature brittleness, high temperature plasticity, metallic conductivity and good thermal diffusivity. The higher silicides such as MSi2 and M5Si3 exhibit superior oxidation ressitance due to a silicate passivating layer, similar to the Si-based ceramics SiC and Si3N4. To exploit the high temperature potential of the silicides in load-bearing applications it is necessary to improve fracture toughness whilst suppressing plasticity at the higher temperature. In this project a series of tailored dispersoids (particles, platelets or whiskers) will be introduced in MSi2 and M5Si3 matrices (M=Mo or Ti) to achieve the proper enhancement and, for some dispersoid compositions (such as Si3N4 and SiC) improvement in oxidation resistance. Theoretical and experimental studies of dispersoid matrix compatibility during fabrication and during high temperature service will be followed by a property survey of selected systems with a view to preparation of demonstrator components (a resistive fur element and a gas burner nozzle).
