Summary on Grant Application Form
This LINK programme will develop sol-gel based routes to amorphous and structured Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al and Al-O-Al two-dimensional phases of controlled thickness and texture. This is appropriate to LINK Nanotechnology because: (i) it deals with novel two-dimensional coatings and structures in the size range 0.1-100 nm of optical and sensor use; (ii) it involves pre-competitive research with three industrial organisations who wish wholeheartedly to exploit the results in very different areas to the benefit of the UK economy; (iii) it brings together the skills of a university and three companies of very different size; it is their diversity which is so beneficial to the programme. The programme has received Outline Approval and is now submitted for consideration as a Formal Application. The RG2 form from Brunel University is attached and the S2 forms from GEC-Marconi GMMT, Pilkingtons, and Scientific Method are being sent separately.
