It is proposed that work be carried out combining dynamical systems theory and the transition of a flow from the laminar to turbulent state. A series of experiments will be carried out recording time series of velocity in the wake of a cylinder placed in a boundary layer. These time series will then be classified using multivariate data analysis. Once the regions where the flow has the same characteristics have been determined, dynamical systems theories can be applied to model the transition process. If simplified equations can be developed as a model of the process, then it should be possible to use this model in a dynamic or active control system where the flow is monitored in the laminar state.
