Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the work is to develop an effective prescribed wake model for horizontal axis wind turbines. The model will be suitable for design applications and so have computer run times in minutes rather than hours; the norm for free wake models. It will include the effects of yaw, dynamic inflow and unsteady aerodynamic coefficients. The development will be phased in four stages in a logical manner from the initial head on condition to the final comprehensive model. The main value of the model will be its detailed aerodynamic output which will be suitable as an input to either a structural or acoustic assessment code. The proposers have already developed a comparable model for vertical axis wind turbines which is now being used by industry.
