Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a detailed study of structure at a microscopic level of particulate dispersions under shear and elongational flow. Experimental investigations will be made using light scattering and small angle neutron scattering in a novel apparatus, which will enable structural information to be determined along the 3 principal axes. Computer simulations will be made on hard sphere models, involving up to 104 particles, which will closely resemble the experimental conditions and thus enable a detailed comparison to be made between experiment and theory. The calculations and experiments will also be extended to systems containing particles and polymer molecules which more closely resemble dispersions encountered in engineering processes, eg paper coating.
