Summary on Grant Application Form
Support is requested for the development and application of effective methods for the quantitative description of eddy structures in turbulent flows, using data from numerical simulations of turbulence. The project builds on current successful research. We aim to develop algorithms capable of conditionally sampling flows, classifying and averaging them and measuring the variation and evolution of the eddy structures. The algorithms will be applied to turbulent boundary layers, near and intermediate wake and the plane jet. By these methods we expect to be able to identify the characteristic eddy structures in these flows, and to describe quantitatively their dynamical origin and destiny. We will also be able to quantify the variation of the eddy structures for the first time, so measuring the partly random or chaotic nature of the processes taking place in these turbulent flows. The project aims to produce real progress in the use of numerical simulation data for providing real understanding of the processes governing the evolution of turbulence.
