Summary on Grant Application Form
A pre-competitive study of design methods for the incorporation of photovoltaic (PV) modules into the exterior cladding of buildings. Thermal regulation is by natural-convection duct flow between the module and the inner cladding, for the control of heat gain and loss of electrical conversion efficiency. Hour-by-hour dynamic models will be developed and validated by measurements with test systems incorporating large-area PV modules which will be donated to the programme. Existing test facilities are used, including the illuminated Hot Box, the SERC Solar Simulator and advanced LDA flow-analysis systems put in place by SERC at Cardiff. The deliverables will be a validated dynamic model for the thermal behaviour, for use in technical and economic evaluation of PV wall systems, with simplified design guidelines, based on correlation methods, for day to day use by designers.
