Summary on Grant Application Form
A collaborative programme of research in engineering turbulence modelling is proposed. Fairly simple models of 2-equation type are the focus of the research for this is the most elaborate level that can foreseeably be employed this century for large-scale 3-dimensional flow problems. The research has three main objectives: (1) In the near-wall sublayer, to reduce the traditional dependence on turbulent number by including in addition a dimensionless mean-strain parameter that direct simulations have suggested is the more influential parameter.(2) The fully turbulent region, to capture with greater fidelity the sensitivity of the turbulent stresses to streamline curvature and irrotational straining with the help of dimensionless strain and vorticity invariants.(3) To reduce considerably overall computer requirements by change in the dependent variable used to evaluate turbulent time scales. The initial model development and evaluation will focus on direct simulations of Couette-type flows and on impinging jets. Further validation and refinement will extend over four other classes of flow giving some 20 test cases in all.
