A method has been developed under an existing SERC grant (GR/F59094) which allos plastic collapse (limit) loads to be accurately estimated using elastic analysis alone (the so-called 'method of elastic compensation'), with applications to pressure vessel design. The aim of this project is to develop this technique further - specifically to extend to the estimation of incremental collapse (shakedown) loads, and to verify both techniques for a wider range of structural components where plastic collapse results can be used as the basis for design.Advanced finite element analysis will be used as the basis for the elastic compensation, and a technique will be researched to estimate suitable residual stress for use in the shakedown theories. Results will be compared to existing solutions and detailed cyclic elastic-plastic analysis. the method will be applied to a range of generic structural components, where results are available, and to a selection of real world problems. Existing theoretical background for limit loads (developed by the applicants) will be extended to shakedown.The proposed simple technique would be a significant advance for improved strength design of mechanical components.
