Summary on Grant Application Form
Preparation of coatings composed of conducting polymer particles with controlled size and morphology. The investigation of film formation by dip-coating into colloidal dispersions, and by Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition methods. Evaluation of the film properties, particularly the conductivity changes in different gaseous environments. Particular attention would be paid to ways in which the film could be chemically modified to detect different gases. These modifications would include adsorbing non volatile organic species onto the conducting polymer particles; by anion exchange; and by the use of 3-substituted heterocycles. New synthesis routes to 3-substituted pyrroles would be explored.
