This proposal seeks funding to initiate research in a new area of crystal science, crystal tectonics. The project aims to employ the selective host-guest principles of molecular recognition and molecular self-organisation as a basis for the ordering or inorganic particles into highly organised assemblies. In particular, high-affinity ligand-receptor polymerization reactions and antibody-antigen complexation will be used as a vehicle to link nano-dimensional crystals of defined crystallographic habit with a view to constructing ordered aggregates. As such aggregates have the potential to exhibit enhanced properties in a range of technological applications (eg catalysis, magneto-optical data storage, molecular electronics), this new avenue of crystal science has important implications for the improved fabrication of inorganic materials.
