Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed that a study be performed on the initial stages of metal growth on dissimilar substrates by electrochemical deposition. This work will involve the use of electrochemical cells. Electrochemical Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy in-situ and Transmission Electron Microscopy to study the deposition of Ni on Cu. Three distinct aspects of this process will be addressed; nucleation and growth geometry, the effect of epitaxy and adsorbates on the microstructure of thin layers, and levelling/brightening mechanisms. The programme will involve close links with British companies and the results obtained should be of considerable technological importance.
