Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is to calculate the photoemission spectrum for the t-J model and to examine the low energy instabilities of this and related models. The two dimensional version of the t-J model contains the basic physics of the interplay of the charge and antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the CuO2 planes of the high Tc materials. These fluctuations are believed to be the source of their anomalous behaviour. The theoretical approach will be based on the two techniques we have developed in our earlier work, (i) numerical renormalisation group calculations (NRG) and (ii) a functional integral approach. The NRG calculations involve the iterative diagonalisation of clusters, with the matrix elements of the many-body wavefunctions retained at each stage so that dynamic properties can be calculated. There is only one other group in the world that has made the investment in comprehensive calculations of this type. This work will progress in parallel with the complementary functional integral calculations. This is an analytic approach based on slave particles (spinons and holons) coupled to an auxiliary field. The functional integrals are calculated within a suitable approximation scheme. In this way we propose to build up a consistent picture of low lying excitations of the model and calculate the response functions for photoemission and Raman spectra for comparison with experiment.
