|
One of the most demanding conditions for adhesive joints is fatigue loading in a hot/wet environment. Unfortunately, these conditions are often seen in structural engineering applications and there is a lack of design data to cover this case. This project will measure the rate of fatigue crack growth in adhesive joint specimens in different environments and use the data to predict the fatigue life of real bonded structures; these predictions will then be checked experimentally. The resulting lifetime prediction model will represent a major step forward in increasing the confidence of designers in the use of adhesives in safety-critical applications. One of the major problems in fatigue tests on adhesive joints is determining the extent of crack growth. The project will develop an ultrasonic scanning system for monitoring crack growth during fatigue tests without the need to remove the specimens from the machine and will also develop a cheap, disposable sensor which will facilitate the automatic monitoring of crack growth in both specimens and real bonded structures. This gauge will have wide application as an intelligent embedded sensor.
