Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is designed to use a combined scanning tunnelling and scanning force microscope facility (STM/SFM) to investigate electrochemical processes. It will make in-situ observations in an electrochemical cell. On anodic surfaces it will be sued to improve the performance of non-toxic corrosion inhibitors and to characterise sacrificial aluminium coatings. At cathodic surfaces it will study the nucleation of electrodeposits and electroless coatings. The STM facility will be used as an electrochemical microprobe and as a scanning electrochemical microscope whilst the SFM will follow the topography of non-conducting surface films. Attempts will also be made to improve the range and performance of these instruments for electrochemical applications.
