Summary on Grant Application Form
Two types of (2) rotaxane will be synthesised. The first type comprises an electron rich thread carrying a terminal donor and an electron deficient bead to function as an acceptor. The second type comprises an electron rich bead carrying a donor group and an electron deficient thread with an acceptor terminus. In addition, systems in which the thread carries donor and acceptor groups at opposite ends will be prepared. Time resolved laser spectroscopy will be used to evaluate rates of electron transfer along the thread and between the bead and the thread.
