Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to employ ferromagnetic resonance techniques to examine the magnetic interactions in a series of particulate magnetic recording media. These will initially be -Fe2O3 which is an ideal material for theoretical modelling. The ultimate aim is to study barium hexaferrite media, which are of technological interest for high density recording. We shall carry out experiments at 9.5 GHz and 34 GHz between 4K and room temperature. Measurements at 4K will enable more careful comparisons between theory and experiment. In order to extract the wealth of information available from the data we shall develop theoretical modelling techniques. The main approach will be based on direct numerical solution of the Landau-Lifschitz equation for strongly interacting systems. Since the Hamiltonian involved is very similar to that used in 'microscopic' simulations based on the Random Anisotropy Model, we shall also compare results from such microscopic simulations of the same media. Our intention is to gain useful understanding of the magnetic interactions in barium hexaferrite media with commercial potential. We have access to precursor particles for such media and shall attempt to apply the experimental and theoretical techniques developed on -Fe2O3 and nanocrystalline barium hexaferrite to these more complex systems.
