Summary on Grant Application Form
Current studies (GR/F 28106) at shear rates up to about 10s-1 and under conditions of simple shear have shown very complex effects on the miscibility limits of binary polymer blends. Enhanced mixing and demixing may both result depending on the temperature, concentration and shear rate. Moreover, miscibility gaps may also be induced at temperatures below the quiescent limits. The new proposal aims to extend these studies in several ways, all of which are intended to bring the results closer to technological applications. Miscibility will be determined as currently, initially by changes in optical clarity and subsequently checked by observation of glass transition temperatures. We will explore the contribution of extensional flow and also extend the shear rates studied towards the much higher values encountered during processing. To achieve these conditions samples will have to be observed under flow rather than sliding shear, and much larger quantities of sample will be required. We propose both to prepare the blends and to drive the flow using a miniature twin screw extruder. The equipment will allow us to prepare blends under conditions nearer to practical application and also to explore a range of systems with a view to identifying classes of behaviour.
