Summary on Grant Application Form
Aluminium metal matrix composites are to be made by salt and gas reactions to give dispersoids of TiB2, Ti5Si3 and TiN. The effect of salt parameters, feed rate, stirring etc will be examined in terms of the thermodynamics and kinetics of particulate reactions. These will be followed by DSC to obtain fundamental data that can be related to the in-situ reaction processes. Special equipment will be constructed for the reactions within aluminium and at least two alloy systems will be investigated. Microstructural development will be followed using an analytical SEM and finally the properties of the composites will be correlated with the details of particulate formation and microstructure.
