Selected anion deficient electronic conducting oxide materials will be synthesised and exposed to H2/H2O gaseous environments to produce mixed electronic/protonic ceramic membranes/electrode components. Protonic and oxygen ion mass transport parameters will be measured using D/H and 180/160 isotopic exchange with dynamic SIMS to determine the relevant diffusion profiles. For promising systems, compositional and microstructural features will be adjusted to produce optimal electronic and mass transport behaviour. Finally these optimised materials will be evaluated as ceramic membranes for the separation of hydrogen, and as anodes for solid state electrochemical devices incorporating protonic electrolytes.
