Summary on Grant Application Form
The applicant and co-workers in a previous study have developed nanocrystalline ternary FeNdB alloys, produced by melt spinning and having substantially enhanced remanence and energy product for application in resin bonded and possibly also in hot pressed permanent magnets. These can be processed by the preferred route of overquenching and annealing. The aim of this present programme is to study the influence on the microstructure, phase constitution and magnetic properties of: (i) alloying additions including elements that are known to promote grain refinement and to retard grain growth and substitutions of other rare earth elements for Nd that are expected to intrinsically increase coercivity and (ii) modified annealing parameters, including increased heating ratios that are expected to enhance the crystal nucleation frequency. Thus the work is directed at investigating methods by which the enhanced remanence associated with the exchange coupling between grains in nanocrystalline structures can be retained or even enhanced while at the same time increasing the intrinsic coercivity and also at optimising further the heat treatment for useful commercial exploitation.
