Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective is to grow and optimise laser active thin films by excimer and TEA CO2 laser ablation-deposition. Specifically, Nd:glass, Nd:YAG and Ti:Al2O3 will be investigated using direct ablation from bulk samples and, for Ti:Al2O3, from dual samples. Films will be characterised using x-ray, electron microprobe and SEM techniques, and their suitability for use as waveguide lasers studied using optical techniques. Growth on various substrates will be investigated using laser deposited buffer layers. Slab guides and also channel guides, fabricated from slabs by excimer laser machining, will be tested for laser action using optical pumping.
