The objective is to obtain optically biazial liquid crystals which can be developed for fast switching devices by virtue of a visible change arising from a rapid molecular rotation about the molecular long axis. Such switching speeds would be faster than those achievable in TND, ferroelectric or electroclinic devices and are the fastest attainable by molecular motion in a condensed phase system. The programme will build on our experience with copper (II) complexes of 1,3-diketones and on the reported examples of similar borderline calamitic/discotic behaviour seen with non-metal containing x-shaped molecules. Some of the structure-property relationships we have established for x-shaped systems are distinctly different from those recognised in calamitic systems and the synthesis of x-shaped molecules with specific physical properties is now feasible by using reactions which permit unsymmetrical molecules to be prepared. (Unlike the examples so far reported, all of which are symmetrical).
