Some important problems relating to the hydration and durability of hydraulic cements will be investigated. The main experimental techniques to be employed are analytical transmission electron microscopy and solid state NMR spectroscopy, which have already been shown to complement one another powerfully in studies of cements. The completion of a study of the microstructure of carbonated cement pastes will be supplemented by the development of models for the kinetics of carbonation, to allow prediction of the effects of variables such as humidity and content of pozzolan in the cement. The use of 29Si enrichment will allow the hydration of cement at elevated temperatures to be followed in situ in the NMR spectrometer. Combined with analytical transmission electron microscopy this will allow a full determination of the structure of hydration products to be made. The use of 29Si enrichment will also allow the use of 2D NMR spectroscopy techniques to develop a deeper understanding of calcium silicate hydrate gel structure and allow the reaction products of enriched silica to be distinguished from those of tricalcium silicate in the pozzolanic reaction. Al NMR will also be used in conjunction with electron microscopy to develop a model of the structure calcium silicate hydrate cement gels containing substituted.
