Summary on Grant Application Form
The synthesis of macrocycles incorporating long-chain side groups will be investigated and liquid crystal formation monitored. The ionophores to be studied include polyaza systems, which will be functionalised at the N-donor sites, and polythioether crowns, which will be functionalised via hydroxy groups on the C-backbone of the ring. Liquid crystal formation will be monitored by microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, and related to the structural motifs within the material. The effects of varying ring-size, donor groups of the macrocycle, the peripheric groups, and the presence or absence of metal ion on liquid crystal formation will be investigated.
