Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to fabricate nanostructures on gold surfaces and examine the properties of tip features so created. The fabrication is carried out by use of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) in one of two modes of operation. Either the scan tip is crashed in a controlled fashion into the gold surface thereby producing a dent or a voltage pulse is applied between the STM scan tip and the surface of interest to produce (usually) a mound on the surface. The properties of these written features will be studied as a function of time, temperature and stress to learn about the processes of surface diffusion and to define limits on this form of nanolithography.
