Summary on Grant Application Form
Intercalation of C60 by alkali-metals leads to superconducting compounds of stoichiometry A3C60 with transition temperatures Tc as high as 33K. We propose to attempt to synthesise by both solid state synthetic routes and by reactions with highly reactive organometallic precursors novel alkaline-earth, Group III and lanthanide-metal doped fullerides. The intercalation chemistry of the higher fullerene C70 will be also investigated as well as the reactivity of electron-acceptors towards the fullerenes. We also intend to study systematically by a number of techniques (conductivity, susceptibility, x-ray and neutron diffraction, quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering, mSR) the evolution in properties of alkali-doped superconducting fullerides and their non-metallic analogues as a function of dopant level, temperature and pressure and explore the relevance of our results to the proposed mechanisms for superconductivity. Finally, the availability of large enough quantities of C70 and higher fullerenes will allow us to study the as yet unknown solid state properties of these fullerenes.
