The work proposed here is a fundamental investigation of the transformation plasticity of bainite in polycrystalline samples of austenite subjected to stresses below the yield strength. It is very different from all previous investigations in three important respects. Firstly, it involves the use of a unique experimental technique in order to reveal the role of the deviatoric components of the transformation strain. Secondly, the role of the applied stress in altering the degree of organisation in the microstructure will be investigated quantitatively. We have already established qualitatively that the microstructure becomes less chaotic when only favoured crystallographic variants grow under the influence of applied stress. Finally, we wish to model the entire process theoretically and it is expected that the results will reveal much about the mechanism of bainitic transformation in steels.Transformation plasticity is of importance in the development of residual stresses and in influencing the organisation of microstructure in any system which undergoes phase changes during heat-treatment. The deviatoric component of transformation strain has never been taken into account in the calculation of residual stress. The work proposed here should lay the foundations for better calculations of residual stress in welded or heat-treated steels.
