Summary on Grant Application Form
Transparent LB film-forming materials will be synthesised, deposited and characterised with the aim of enhancing the second harmonic generation (SHG) at 532 nm (green) and 400 nm (blue). The project is based upon the recent discovery at Cranfield of a novel method of improving the SH intensity from a hemicyanine monolayer, the signal being 400 times larger than reported previously by the GEC group for the same chromophore. The SHG is the strongest from a monolayer LB film, and building on this discovery the aims are to fabricate (i) transparent films with greatly improved SHG and (ii) micron-thick films with intensities which increase quadratically with the number of layers deposited.
