Summary on Grant Application Form
The industrial partners will use modern embroidery machines to lay down reinforcing fibres as exact size preforms wuitable for components of complex shape. Preforms may include cut-outs which could be embroidered directly onto sheets of woven or random reinforcement material. The University programme will address two main areas: processability and design. Processability will, in the main, be concerned with measurements of permeability on a macro- and micro-scale and with the flow of resin through the preforms. The design aspects are concerned with the relationships between the specification of the embroidery design, the load requirements, processing performance and subsequent mechanical performance of the cured composite.
