Summary on Grant Application Form
To establish a new architecture, design route and CAD environment for smart vision applications. Progress:Overall progress has been excellent. Our main industrial partner, VVL, has already launched a product, The Imputer, which has met with acclaim in the marketplace. This embodies the smart vision architecture, which was our first objective. The Imputer won the Photonics Circle of Excellence Award as one of the most innovative products introduced world-wide in 1994. The Imputer includes a CAD environment which allows users to code vision applications in C and to compile and download these for execution on a stand-alone smart vision module containing twin micro controller and DSP processors. We have attempted to extend this vehicle to enable users to compile gate-level hardware from the same C source, for execution on field-programmable FPGAs. This has thus far been less successful, due mainly to limitations in the performance and usability of these devices. We can, and have, produced hand-coded demonstrators, but cannot foresee full automation of this route. In a parallel exercise, we are succeeding with a C-Verilog-Gate design route for semi-custom vision systems, which requires significant manual input but is nevertheless highly efficient. We plan to document and report this for others to follow.
